The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is looking for personnel with scheduling, pre-registration and patient registration experience. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) will provide exceptional customer service to include answering phone calls, scheduling patient appointments, and providing face to face customer service. The AMSA will perform administrative support duties in Clinic settings or Telephone Call Centers.
The AMSA is the front line contact with patients and staff. The AMSA sets the tone for perception concerning quality of healthcare services at the VA. A high degree of tact and diplomacy is required when dealing with Veterans who have multiple health problems and who may be frustrated with the administrative process associated with diagnosis and treatment.
Applicants applying for this position must possess at least one year of specialized experience related to the duties below:
· Providing administrative support to physicians, physician assistants, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and other administrative and professional staff throughout the clinic;
· Updating and verifying demographic information;
· Administratively managing consultation requests and the electronic wait list;
· Notifying patients of their scheduled appointments;
· Adjusting appointment times, location, or dates as well as shifting patients to other healthcare providers as conflict with staffing and/or coverage occurs;
· Explaining the VA's Mandate to collect insurance information to veterans, their families, and other eligible patients;
· Collecting, scanning, and updating health insurance information;
· Contributing to the revenue collection process by identifying patients with third party insurance;
· Screening/receiving phone calls in a courteous and timely manner;
· Participating in the daily teamlet huddles and weekly team meetings; and
· Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Experience: Experience working in a Hospital or Clinic Setting.

We have immediate openings at the Medical Center Houston campus and the following outpatient clinics: Beaumont, Texas City/ Galveston, Lufkin, Katy, Richmond , Conroe, Lake Jackson and Tomball.

GS-6 Salary Range: $40,262.00 - $60, 341.00 annually (Salary is determined by work location and experience. All salaries above the starting rate must be approved by Management)

*Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process. Including but not limited to scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient care portals, as relates to access to care.
*Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient work flow, and patient support care or administrative functions that include but are not limited to, appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, etc.
*Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
