About this Event
On the 16th May 1896, after a concerted local campaign and with the help of Octavia Hill and Robert Hunter, two of the original founders of the National Trust, farmland that had been earmarked for housing development was saved for the public and on the 16th May 1896 Hilly Fields opened as a park.
130 years later, on the 16th May we will celebrate the park’s birthday with a nice walk and on the way describe its early beginnings and the people who helped to shape it. We will also cover the area's eventful history from the 17th century to the Modern day.
There will be an opportunity to join one of two walks either led by Rachel Mooney, Friends of Hilly Fields or Graeme Mitchell, Dilettante and Gun for Hire.
The walk times are:-
10:30am
12:30am
The walks should last about an hour and a half, and as the park's name suggests there are several relatively steep ascents and descents.
We will also take some of the less trodden paths which may be muddy so sensible footwear is advisable.
The walks are free and there is no need to book, just turn up at the Hilly Fields' noticeboard by Pistachios in the Park at your preferred time, but if you want notification of time changes or cancellations due to inclement weather or earthquake, please register with Eventbrite to receive updates.
