Hillary Watson Trio
Hillary is a singer-songwriter and multi-disciplinary creative with a sound that defies easy categorization. Classically trained and endlessly curious, she draws on a rich tapestry of influences—from folk and rock to musical theatre—to craft music that is rhythmically driven, emotionally resonant, and refreshingly original. A member of the award-winning harmony group The Pairs, Hillary’s solo work carves out its own distinct path, blending sharp lyrical insight with a raw, percussive edge. Her songs explore the complexities of human experience with honesty and nuance, offering listeners a soundscape that is both familiar and strikingly new.
Now joined by Steve Plimmer on drums and Matt Grady on bass, the music takes on a new life edged with alternative rock and folk/punk.
Michael Louis Johnson
Actor, comic, writer, and musician, simply put, Michael Louis Johnson is an entertainer. In the 90s he was a SwingPunk innovator with Big Rude Jake till he blowed-up on the silver screen in cult hit Bride of Chucky. In the 2000s his collective Streets Are For People! created the Pedestrian Sundays festival in Kensington Market and he was a principal subject of 2010 documentary, A Different Path. Punk legends RANCID were fans of his protest rock band The New Kings. Voted Toronto's Best Bartender in NOW Magazine, he is creator of popular democratic vinyl night, Dcide on the Bside. He fronts a giant improvised brass band called Rambunctious. He is a founding member of globe-trotting Balkan Klezmer Party Punks, Lemon Bucket Orkestra and his quintet Red Rhythm has held a weekly jazz residency at the Communist's Daughter since 2003.
"My solo show features songs that I've written for my various bands over the years; protest songs from the New Kings, heartbreak songs from Dimestore Orchestra, story songs from my days at the Commie. I've written songs for films, and songs for plays. Some songs are funny, some songs are angry, and some I've been told are quite lovely. I like finger-picking an acoustic guitar, I also like cranking a bit of distortion on the ole electric. I've been told my singing is a mix of Leonard Cohen and Joe Strummer."
