This weekend, London Social Hiking is off to a new destination: the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast in the North York Moors National Park! With its Jurassic-era coastline, towering cliffs, steep wooded valleys, sandy beaches, picturesque villages, abundant wildlife and history every step of the way, the world-famous and specially protected Heritage Coast is a fascinating place to explore!
On Saturday, we'll follow the coastal path, which will take us to the mighty Boulby Cliff. At 213 metres above sea level, it's the highest point on the east coast of England. The cliffs were once mined for ironstone and alum, we'll see many remnants of this industry along the way. We'll finish our hike at the quaint fishing village of Staithes, which boasts the narrowest street in the country, known as Dog Loup. At a mere 45cm wide, there's barely enough room for a man to squeeze through! After the hike, we'll drive to our hotel, where we'll have dinner and rest.
On Sunday, we'll discover the charming Robin Hood's Bay and its fishing village with narrow winding paths, cobbled streets and fishing harbour. Robin Hood's Bay was once famed as a haven for smugglers, with silk, tobacco, brandy and rum moved via a network of secret passages and tunnels. We'll walk along the cliff tops and enjoy dramatic views of the North Sea, the sweeping bay and soaring cliffs. Today's hike will finish in the historic seaside town of Whitby, where Captain Cook, one of the world's greatest explorers and navigators, started his maritime career. We'll pass the atmospheric ruins of the 13th-century Whitby Abbey, where in 664 AD the Synod of Whitby determined when Easter was to be held, a ruling which we follow to this day. After the hike, we'll have lunch in Whitby, which has a great selection of fish & chips shops and tearooms.
