Get into shape and reward yourself with incredible views as we tackle one of the Bay Area’s steepest hikes: Mission Peak! The summit of Mission Peak lies at only 2,517 feet above sea level, but the trailhead on Stanford Avenue in Fremont is at an elevation of 400 feet. This creates an intense elevation gain of 2,117 feet over only 3 miles. That’s 70 vertical feet climbed for every tenth of a mile hiked!
This 6 mile loop makes an excellent training trip for all sorts of future ascents: Half Dome, Shasta or even Kilimanjaro. Besides the inherent challenge, Mission Peak rewards all those who make the summit with outstanding 360° views. We’ll have views of Fremont, San Francisco Bay, the San Bruno mountains, and the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge to the west; the Sunol Regional Wilderness to the east; Calaveras Reservoir, Monument Peak, and Mt. Allison to the southeast; Mt. Hamilton to the south; and Mt. Tamalpais to the northwest.
