Hike to Arundel Castle and the rolling hills of the downs

Starting from Amberley station, this scenic hike follows sections of the South Downs Way, climbing onto open grassy ridges with sweeping views across the Arun Valley and, on clear days, glimpses of the English Channel. The route heads toward Rackham Hill, before turning south over Barpham Hill, where the landscape opens into classic rolling downland. We then descend into the peaceful Wepham Woods, a tranquil stretch of oak and beech woodland that feels wonderfully secluded. Leaving the woods, views begin to open toward Arundel Castle, its towers rising dramatically above the town. The walk finishes in Arundel, where cobbled streets, historic buildings, and the castle backdrop create a memorable end to a hike that perfectly blends hilltop views, woodland paths, and historic countryside.

Meeting Time: 09:00 – London Victoria Station (next to the information booth near Platform 12) Trains: 09:35 from London Victoria → Amberley, arriving 10:58 Tickets: Return to Arundel (buy in advance or on the day) Hike Start: 11:05 – Amberley Station Lunch: Pack Lunch Hike Finish: Around 17:00 – Arundel Station Return Trains: Frequent services back to London 🚆 Train fare is not included – please purchase your own return ticket in advance or on the day.
