About this Event
You asked for it. We are finally screening the most requested title of our communty cinema.
Join us at The Canopi, Cardiff on Wednesday 27th May for a free screening of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low (天国と地獄, 1963), presented with English subtitles.
Widely regarded as one of Kurosawa's finest works, High and Low was the highest-grossing Japanese film of 1963. Decades on, it remains a fixture on lists of the greatest films ever made; cited as a major influence by Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and George Lucas.
Based on Ed McBain's crime novel King's Ransom, the film is a masterclass in sustained tension and a diabolical thriller that doubles as a searing portrait of class, conscience, and postwar Japan.
The showing will follow a discussion on Kurosawa's use of deep focus cinematography, his spatial storytelling, and the cinematic techniques that set his work apart. Whether you're a first-time viewer or a long-time admirer, all perspectives are welcome.
