About this Event
Learn to read and write using ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
This 8-week course, designed specifically for complete beginners, will allow you to recognise and understand common hieroglyphs and text. Throughout the course you will be taught about basic hieroglyphs, and these will be related to your own personal biographies which will culminate in the creation of your own biographic stela.
The course is built using the internationall important ancient Egyptian collections of Bolton Museum, as well as significant collections from museums around the world, allowing you to take your learning into real world museum settings.
The course is brought to you by Bolton's Egypt and will be delivered by Hieroglyphics expert Hazel McGuinness.
At the end of the course you will recieve a certificate of completion.
The course is 8 sessions, split over 10 weeks:

Take away learning will be supplied after each session to help you make the most of your learning.
LOCATION
The course will take place at Bolton Library and Museum, Le Mans Crescent, Bolton, BL1 1SE.
COURSE FEE
The course fee is £65 - thats less that £10 per session!
This covers all 8 sessions; you cannot pay for part of the course or for singular sessions, and will not be refuned for missed sessions. The fee also covers all materials that you will need during the course. Refreshments are also provided during the sessions, which are included in the fee.
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Hazel is a Local Ambassador for the Egypt Exploration Society and both Secretary and committee member of the Horus Egyptology Society, one of the largest such societies in the UK. She has been studying the Egyptian collection at Bolton Museum since 2004, and specialising in ancient Egyptian language, specifically Middle to Late Egyptian, has studied hieroglyphic inscriptions throughout Egypt including those in the Wadi Hammamat, el-Kab, Beni Hassan and Saqqara. Giving Egyptology talks and lectures around the North, she also teaches hieroglyph classes, has published in Current Archaeology magazine and has contributed to several language-based publications including 'The Amarna Boundary Stelae' (2013) and 'Khnumhotep: Prince of Beni Hassan' (2020) for which she also wrote the introduction.

TUESDAY 28th APRIL- Week 1 : Introduction to Hieroglyphics
Info: In the first week you will be given and introduction to the history of hieroglyph discovery and will be introduced to the hieroglyphic alphabet, and the biliteral and triliteral sounds.

Info: In the second week you will be extend your knowledge of basic hieroglyphic sounds with the introduction to hieroglyphs called phonetic complements and determinatives.

TUESDAY 12th MAY - Week 3: Titulary
Info: In the third week you will learn about how the Egyptian royalty were written about in hieroglyphs, as well as the titles and biographical descriptions of more ordinary Egyptians, their familial determinations and occupations.

Info: In the fourth week you will learn about some of the many Egyptian gods and the ways in which they were written in hieroglyphs, as well as their relationship in text with individuals.

Info: In the fifth week you will learn some of the most common royal names and will be introduced to the practice of honorific transposition by combining this with your learnt knowledge from previous sessions.

Info: In the sixth week you will learn some of the most common hieroglyphic formulas used in ancient Egyptian text.

Info: In the seventh week you will combine everything you have learned in the previous 6 sessions to create your own stela.

Info: In the eighth and final week you will spend this in the museum galleries putting your learnt knowledge of reading hieroglyphs into practice using the real Egyptian artefacts on display.
