Hip Hop was born from Black resistance, creativity, and community care.
The Roots of Hip Hop + The Power of DJing is a Hip Hop Healing workshop that explores the cultural origins of Hip Hop and the foundational role of the DJ as historian, archivist, and vibe-setter. Together, we’ll look at how Hip Hop emerged as a response to systemic oppression and how DJing became a powerful tool for storytelling, gathering, and survival.
This session blends history, music, and creative expression, inviting participants to learn, reflect, and create in a supportive, culturally grounded space.
What We’ll Explore
- The origins of Hip Hop and its roots in Black resistance
- The role of the DJ as a cultural archivist and community connector
- How sound, rhythm, and “the vibe” shape collective experience
- Hip Hop as a living history and healing practice
No prior writing or music experience is required. Must be a Black Youth 12-29
Learning Objectives
- By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Identify the cultural origins and core elements of Hip Hop
- Understand the role of DJing in Black resistance and Hip Hop culture
- Begin sharing personal narratives through lyric writing
