Celebrate a year of Unlocking the Vaults
About this Event

Join us at The Exchange as we celebrate the halfway point of the Unlocking the Vaults project, a fascinating journey into the history and legacy of the Birmingham Municipal Bank.

What to expect

  • Meet members of the volunteer research group as they share their discoveries, insights, and passion for uncovering the story of this pioneering civic institution. Drawing on materials from the Library of Birmingham archives and other sources, the group has explored the Municipal Bank’s role in the city's financial and social landscape.
  • You’ll also hear stories from characters connected with the bank, with performances based on oral histories in collaboration with The Birmingham Rep’s education team.
  • Join one of our popular building tours of The Exchange led by an expert guide.
  • Catch up with our ongoing local photography project, and watch community art come to life as local artist Sajida Asif stitches together fabric pieces created by the Springfield Creative Women's Group for the project last year.
  • Children's trail activities will also be available for curious families.

The story so far

Birmingham Municipal Bank earned the name "The People's Bank" locally by empowering working people to save, invest, and build a secure future.

Our project has already revealed the significance of the Birmingham Municipal Bank, not only as a financial institution but also as a cornerstone of community life. Through a wide variety of activities, the project is engaging schools, communities, and visitors alike, continuing the bank’s tradition of bringing people together since its founding in 1919.

Come and discover how this remarkable institution helped shape Birmingham’s story and how its legacy continues to inspire pride in the city’s rich heritage.

With thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Suitable for all ages.
