About this Event
Join Industrial curator Jutin Parkes to hear the story of an early failure, the Coatbridge-built Gartsherrie Coal Cutter, as well as one of the biggest successes, the Motherwell mining engineering firm Anderson Boyes and Co.
In the mid-1800s inventors started to experiment with ways to replace coal miners with machines. Demand for coal was rapidly growing but at the same time the miners were organising to demand better pay and conditions. The mine owners wanted to reduce their reliance on manual labour. However, it was a long road to the first successful coal cutting machines.
