About this Event
Handel Concerto Grossi No.1 in G major
Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.2 in F BWV 1047
Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 4 in G BWV 1049
Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 5 in D BWV 1050
"Being in Bach’s music has that sense of otherness: it’s another world we enter, as performers or listeners." John Eliot Gardiner's words explain why we turn to Bach for comfort, solace and hope. This concert features some of the great composer's best-loved music, the Brandenburg Concertos. The Second Concerto showcases a diverse group of solo instruments representing almost every section of the orchestra - trumpet, recorder, oboe and violin. The Fourth Concerto interweaves two sprightly recorders with solo violin against a backdrop of strings, whilst the innovative Fifth Brandenburg Concerto features virtuosic harpsichord playing, designed by the composer to show off his own tremendous skill at the keyboard. This joyous work is full of driving rhythmic passages and ingenious counterpoint.
