In a celebration of the 55th anniversary of 84, Charing Cross Road being published in the UK, and to mark the brand new publication of Helene Hanff’s memoir Underfoot in Show Business, published by Manderley Press, Foyles is delighted to welcome the novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz, cousin to Helene, and writer Emma Gannon. Emma and Jean will discuss the life and works of Helene; as well as the continued relevance of, and interest in, her classic work, some five decades after its initial publication.
Jean Hanff Korelitz was born in New York and graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Cambridge. She is the bestselling author of nine novels, including The Plot, The Sequel, The Latecomer, A Jury Of Her Peers, The Sabbathday River, The White Rose, Admission, and most recently the New York Times bestseller You Should Have Known (adapted as HBO’s The Undoing, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant). In addition, Korelitz is the author of a collection of poems, The Properties of Breath, and a middle grade reader, Interference Powder. Her novels have been translated into 30 languages.
Emma Gannon is the Sunday Times bestselling author of nine books, including A Year of Nothing and OLIVE, which was nominated for the Dublin Literary Award. Her second novel, Table for One (2025), was chosen as one of Apple’s best books of 2025. Emma also writes one of the UK’s most popular Substack newsletters, The Hyphen, which has thousands of paid subscribers. In addition to her writing, she hosts creativity retreats around the world and served as a judge for the 2025 Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction.
