This weekend features two separate, distinct and unforgettable dance performances, presenting three iconic, Bauhaus-inspired works choreographed by Hedwig Dances’ Founder/Artistic Director Jan Bartoszek.

This trio of dances brings to life the playful, experimental, abstract world of the Bauhaus modernist art movement, incorporating immaculate costuming, innovative lighting design, and artistic themes developed in homage to, and collaboration with, the major players in the Bauhaus movement.

FRIDAY, APRIL 25TH + SATURDAY, APRIL 26TH 2025 - META | MOR | PHOS - A Triadic Fiction

"META| MOR | PHOS is an experimental arrangement and practice model of human transformation." -Christel Sperlich, Neues Deutschland-Berlin

META | MOR | PHOS is a sequel to Oskar Schlemmer’s 1922 “Triadic Ballet,” an icon of dance and performance art. While Schlemmer oriented his work toward a man-machine symbiosis, the ideas in META | MOR |PHOS are re-directed through the metamorphosis of insects to an existential connection to the natural world. META | MOR | PHOS is co-production between Hedwig Dances and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

META | MOR | PHOS includes authentic reproductions of Oskar Schlemmer’s "Triadic Ballet'' costumes as well as newly designed costumes by Torsten Blume and Jacky Kelsey, fabricated by the Chicago Puppet Studio. Patricia Taxxon composed the score, with additional music and sound design by Richard Woodbury.

Runtime: Approx. 50 mins.

SUNDAY, APRIL 27TH 2025 - Futura and LightPlay

Futura is a “visual metaphor for Bauhaus’ revolutionary ideology.”

- Oliver Sava, Chicago Reader

Futura is an eye-popping spectacle of bold geometry, rich theatrical movement, and a rousing musical score. Jan Bartoszek applies the principles of the Bauhaus modernist art movement to dance and explores how dance shapes and is shaped by society, art, architecture, and design in the 21st century.

Futura is a collaboration with composer Richard Woodbury, costume designer Sanja Manakoski and video designer Jason White of Leviathan.

LightPlay is inspired by the life and work of Bauhaus artist Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Bartoszek reflects on artistic experimentation, process, and development. A series of vignettes structure the dance which interweaves significant chapters of Moholy-Nagy’s life and artistic development as he moved from his birthplace in Hungary to his adult years at the Bauhaus and in Berlin, Germany to his final home at the New Bauhaus in Chicago.

LightPlay is a visual symphony that includes interactive design, colorful geometric props, and multiple forms of projections in the exploration of abstraction and visual metaphor.

LightPlay is a collaboration between choreographer Jan Bartoszek, playwright and visual artist Sharon Evans Ragir who wrote the text, sound designer and composer Erica Ricketts who created an original score, and video designer Eileen Ryan.

Runtime: Approx. 90 mins.
