About this Event
I am so excited and honoured to be hosting in my home the legendary Jay Douglas, a man whose career spans over 60 years and serves as the heartbeat of the Jamaican-Canadian music scene. As a multi-Juno Award nominee and the unofficial "godfather" of this music in Toronto, Jay is a living link between the pioneers of the 1960s and the Canadian superstars of today. From his early days as a teenager in Toronto’s underground scene to headlining with the All Stars, Jay has blazed a trail for Canadian icons like Drake and The Weeknd, who truly stand on the shoulders of his lifelong work.
Jay’s remarkable journey is the focal point of the acclaimed feature documentary - Play it out Loud. The film tells the powerful, little-known story of how Jay and a cohort of Jamaican expats transformed Toronto into a global mecca for reggae and ska. Despite facing systemic racism and indifference in the early days, these artists built a vibrant culture through basement studios and legendary spots like Club Jamaica. The film celebrates Jay’s personal triumphs and his role in a social migration that forever changed the Canadian cultural landscape.
Six decades into his career, Jay Douglas is more popular—and more vital—than ever. This concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the "Caribbean vibes" and soulful rhythms that Jay has carried from rural Jamaica to the world stage. Don't miss the chance to hear the music and stories of a man who didn't just witness the birth of a movement; he helped create it. Come celebrate a true pioneer who is finally receiving the long-overdue recognition and respect his talent deserves.
Jay Douglas will be accompanied by his longtime drummer and musical partner, Everton "Pablo" Paul, who recruited him to The Cougars back in the 1960s and David de Launay on keyboards who played with Jay back in the 1970s and a bass player to be announced
