In honor of the Gordon Parks exhibition currently on view, Philbrook and Tulsa Flyer present the first of two town hall discussions exploring the social impact of journalism through words and images.

Tim Landes
Tim Landes is the food, arts and culture editor at the Tulsa Flyer. Prior to joining the inaugural editorial team at the Tulsa Flyer, Tim spent a decade managing media relations for Cherokee Nation businesses, co-created the Cherokee Nation’s online newsroom, the Anadisgoi, and worked as a digital and features editor for the TulsaPeople Magazine. Now, he is dedicated to covering Tulsa’s art scene where community creatives are pushing boundaries and creating a stronger culture. He currently serves as the vice chair for the Cherokee Phoenix editorial board and is a board member of the Tulsa Press Club.

Fred Sweets
Fred Sweets joined the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1968 as its first Black staff photographer. After a decade there, he joined The Washington Post, where he was a photographer and editor for 13 years. His assignments included coverage of Presidents Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush, as well as the 1992 Los Angeles riots, daily news, features and sports. After covering the uprising sparked by the verdicts in the Rodney King trial, Sweets joined the Los Angeles Times as a senior photo editor. Sweets joined The Associated Press(AP) in 1995 as chief of the Washington, DC photo department, the news cooperative’s largest photo operation. In addition to managing coverage of the DC region, which included the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, and four professional sports teams. He directed coverage of the disputed 2000 presidential election and the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, among other major stories. In 1999, Sweets accepted a Pulitzer Prize on behalf of the AP photo staff for coverage of the Clinton impeachment.
Dudley M. Brooks
Dudley M. Brooks is the former Deputy Director of Photography for The Washington Post, where he managed the creative strategy and production of photo content for the Features, Local and Sports departments. Before its discontinuance in December of 2022, he was also the Photo Editor of The Washington Post Magazine. Prior to this, he was the Director of Photography for the monthly magazine Ebony and Senior Photo Editor for its weekly sister periodical Jet – both formerly published by Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago. Brooks is an active participant in several professional photography organizations and has been a presenter/instructor at Addis Foto Fest – a bi-annual photography event launched in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – and its latest incarnation of Africa Foto Fair (AFF) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He also served as the national chairman for the 2021 National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism contest – sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) and is a board member of the Social Documentary Network (SDN).
