Bonnie McCoy was born into a Blues family that included not only her guitarist father, George McCoy, and aunt Ethel McCoy, but also legendary blues pioneers, Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie. Bonnie grew up singing, but never really desired to be onstage. There were various times as a child where she went along with her father to his concerts and one time when he passed her the mic and told her simply, “Sing Bonnie!” She did and from then on, she knew she had the ability to truly sing the Blues, a legacy living within her too! After several attempts of the late Bob West, requesting and encouraging Bonnie to make an album, she finally accepted the calling in 2011 and went to Seattle where she joined forces with a band of local musicians. They recorded her album titled, “Bonnie McCoy A Child of The Blues. “ Bonnie now lives in Chicago, sings original music written by her husband Marcus, other family members and a catalogue of many Blues greats.
2023 marked 50 years since Charlotte's first professional gig singing with her dad - legendary Spokane jazz pianist Arnie Carruthers. Over the years, she's played and sang with many kinds of bands - rock, country, funk, jazz, even polka! She also spent much of the last 35 years singing in classical choirs in New York, Eugene and Seattle. Since moving to Seattle in 1998, her focus has been on jazz - playing piano, singing and, for 10 or so years, directing the local 17-piece big band MachOne. She retired from MachOne at the end of 2023 and quickly joined Northwest Jazz Conspiracy - another of the area's fine big bands. She also stays busy subbing on piano and/or vocals with many other groups ranging from combos to other big bands. She will be playing in Tacoma on April 20 with Rich Wetzel's Groovin' Higher Orchestra (at the Sandbar), and on April 28 with the Seine City Sextet (playing Parisian Cafe music from the 1930's) at Crossroads in Bellevue. Northwest Jazz Conspiracy next plays at 5 Rights Brewery in Marysville on May 22.
