What is the Health Design Lab?
The Health Design Lab (HDL) is a research and design centre at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. The work of HDL is focused on the inclusion of people with lived experience as central contributors to social and systemic change. This focus aligns with the growing emphasis on patient-oriented research and patient-centred care, where those directly affected by health challenges are not just participants, but co-creators of knowledge and strategy. By using participatory design, we elicit deep insights through creative engagement, co-develop inclusive outcomes, and translate complex experiences into accessible, actionable knowledge. By bridging design and health, we are helping to reimagine research and innovation as collaborative, community-rooted, and emergent.
