About this Event

Let's talk about Asian American History and Intergenerational Well-being. Join this special screening of Far East Deep South in New York, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers, an Asian American scholar, and a mental health practitioner on Sunday, October 19, 2:00-4:30 PM at Chinese Baptist Church Houston.

About The Film

Far East Deep South is the award-winning 76-minute documentary about a Chinese American Christian family whose search for their roots leads them to Mississippi. On this journey, they find miraculous family revelations and uncover the racially complex history of Chinese in the segregated South. The film not only shows a powerful family testimony, but it explores the seldom discussed discrimination Asians historically faced and touches upon the role of the church in helping establish Chinese mission schools. It also highlights the interconnected relationship between the Black and Chinese communities in the Jim Crow era and the generational impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

About The Panel

Converse about healing and storytelling with filmmakers Larissa Lam, award-winning director and accomplished music artist, and Baldwin Chiu, award-winning film producer and Gospel hip hop artist (a.k.a β€œOnly Won”), and mental health practitioner Jenny Wang, Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and Clinical Director at Lifeologie Counseling.

Panel facilitated by Daniel D. Lee, Academic Dean of Fuller's Center for Asian American Theology and Ministry (AAC) and Associate Professor of Theology and Asian American Studies.

Admission is FREE, thanks to the grant funding of the KT Foundation.
