About this Event
Ahead of the upcoming Haringey local elections, Haringey Welcome is hosting a public hustings to give residents the opportunity to hear from political representatives standing in the borough, to discuss issues affecting our local communities, and to hear migrant residents’ testimonies from life in Haringey, London, and the UK, including as a result of immigration policies and particularly the hostile environment.
Representatives from all political parties currently represented on Haringey Council have been invited to take part in the panel discussion.
The event will include verbatim theatre testimonies from the Voices for Equality group performed by LegalAliens Theatre, describing experiences of the UK immigration system and its local impacts. These testimonies are based on material collected by Haringey Migrant Support Centre (HMSC).
We are grateful to the performers from LegalAliens Theatre, to the Voices for Equality group, and to those who shared their experiences.
Following the performance, representatives from invited parties will take part in a panel discussion moderated by Haringey Welcome's Myria Georgiou exploring the role of local government in responding to issues affecting migrant residents and the wider community.
Topics discussed may include housing and homelessness, access to public services, the local impact of national immigration policies, and how our local authority can work together with residents and community organisations to make Haringey a truly welcoming borough.
The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A.
Haringey Welcome is a non-party political community organisation working for a welcoming and inclusive borough for all, including migrant and refugee residents. This event is intended to provide a space for residents to hear from candidates and engage with these issues ahead of the election. Haringey Welcome does not endorse any political party or candidate.
