This Halloween we’re welcoming Tomás Stahringer from Vinyes Ocults for our next 3.5-hour Meet the Winemaker Supper Club in Fleet Street. Under the eerie glow of candlelight, Tomás will be treating us to an event celebrating his esteemed wine.
Tomás is truly a fitting guest for this haunted holiday, as his winemaking philosophy borders on mysticism, signaled by the image of a grinning skull that leers from his wine labels. On this night, Tomás will unveil the backstory of the mysterious symbol, shedding light on the inspiration behind it. He sees wine as a living thing animated by the vineyard spirits that gave it life: the Andean glacial melt that refreshes the vines, the years of winegrowing knowledge that shaped the vineyard, and the people who tirelessly worked the land. This sensitivity to the environment and the grape informs his golden touch, which brings an elegance and balance seldom seen in bargain-priced wines.
Vinyes ocults means “hidden vineyard” in Catalan, and while the sites Stahringer draws from might be concealed by poplar trees, it’s not much of a mystery why they turn out such superb wines. Massive diurnal swings here in the high desert allow the grapes to reach huge phenolic ripeness basking in the daytime sunshine, while chilly nights preserve their fresh, natural acids.
Tomás and our fantastic wine gurus will be your guides, taking you through the rich history of six iconic bottles, discussing the story behind the iconic skull you see on every bottle, his unique winemaking philosophy, and the secrets that make these wines so great. So join us for an evening filled with discovery, fun, and, of course, exquisite wine and food. OH, and feel free to come dressed up, it's Halloween after all!
