About this Event
Since 2016, the UK Kwekwe Group has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich cultural heritage of Guyana—particularly the traditional Kwe Kwe, a pre-nuptial ritual rooted in African Guyanese history, and is similar to the Ghanaian knocking or kokoo ko ceremony. This unique practice brings communities together through storytelling, music, dance, and symbolic customs that prepare a couple for married life while celebrating unity, ancestry, and joy.
What to Expect:
• A lively reenactment of the Kwe Kwe ritual, with opportunities for audience participation
• The rhythms of live drumming and traditional folk songs
• A taste of home with delicious Creole Guyanese cuisine, usually served at kwe kwe ceremonies and for celebrating Emancipation.
• A warm, welcoming atmosphere filled with culture, lively music and dancing, a reminder of importance of keeping ancestral traditions alive.
The Kwe Kwe ritual is a vibrant, interactive experience—featuring call-and-response songs, playful yet meaningful traditions, and guidance from elders that reflect the values of love, respect, and community.
Whether you're familiar with Guyanese culture or discovering it for the first time, this is a night not to be missed!
