An brilliant geological walk around the cemetery with Ru Smith, Vice President of Yorkshire Geological Society.York cemetery is a soothing and calm space with an abundance of nature, but there are also some amazing stories to be told about the spectacular diversity of rocks used in headstones.
These range from beautifully crystalline rocks formed in magma chambers deep in the earth’s crust to metamorphic rocks folded under high pressure and temperature conditions, to the sedimentary rocks of the Earth’s surface, formed in equatorial deltas and tropical seas like those of the Bahamas.
The rocks we’ll see on this walk also span nearly half a billion years of deep time in age.
Meet at the Harriet Centre at 2pm, the guided walk will be approximately 1 hr and 30 mins, and is followed by tea and biscuits in the Harriet Centre: This is mainly an outside event so please dress accordingly.
Just come along, no need for a ticket!
We suggest a donation of £5, or £2 for Friends and children. Includes a drink and biscuits.
