About this Event
Join a Forestry England ranger for a guided walk around Cann Wood. We will explore how Forestry England manages this much-loved forest to support its future health in a changing climate, provide public green space, create homes for wildlife, and produce sustainable timber products.
We'll talk about the latest forestry works that have been happening in the forest and talk about the tree diseases we are currently managing. We'll also chat about our future plans for the forest and there will be plenty of chance to ask questions.
About Cann Wood
Cann Wood is a working woodland. This means that it is managed to produce sustainable timber prodicts for UK markets. Most of Cann is also classified as Plantations on Ancient Woodland Site. This means that we are gradually managing Cann to increase its native woodland characteristics while helping the forest to lock up carbon from the atmosphere.
Cann Wood is home to a variety of wildlife, including nesting bird species. The forest also has types of ground flora that indicate its long wooded history, such as bluebells.
Forestry England is committed to supporting people from all backgrounds to connect with nature. About half of Cann Wood is dedicated under the Countryside Rights of Way Act (CROW 2000), which is where we provide public access. Forestry England is a public body, but we receive less than 20% of our funding from government, so we have recently introduced parking charges at Cann Wood to support our ongoing work. Over time, this will support everything from tree planting and biodiversity projects, to the car park, trails, and benches.
