Intro to Improvised Rap

This workshop will cover the basic building blocks of improvised rap:

• Finding your flow
• Successful rhyming
• Land punchlines in improvised songs
• Keeping your cool & having fun while rapping on the fly!

The session involves a lot of writing with pen and paper, and not a huge amount of standing up alone and rapping on the spot. The atmosphere is always very relaxed, fun and supportive!

Rapping is one of the things improvisers find most terrifying. This workshop will help you turn that fear into freedom and fun!

Improvised rap is, additionally, a hugely useful skill for anyone currently improvising musicals and songs, or looking to further their musical improv repertoire.

• Arrive early: please plan to arrive 10 minutes before class so we can start and end on time.
• Dress comfortably: wear movement-friendly clothes that cover you fully (we’ll be moving throughout the space).
• Bring paper or pad & pen/pencil
• Bring water: a reusable water bottle is encouraged — hydration fuels creativity!

We recommend participants have completed Improv 101 (Intro to Improv) or attended several drop-in sessions of equivalent experience.
Ages 16 and up.

Will Naameh is a founding member and performer with The Spontaneous Players, known for their Edinburgh Fringe smash hit show Spontaneous Potter. He is also a performer with Shamilton and Baby Wants Candy, two multi award-winning musical improv shows.
As a solo act, he performs improvised hip hop comedy under the rap name MC Hammersmith. In this guise he has won multiple Scottish Comedy Awards, sold out multiple UK tours, headlines comedy clubs across the UK and internationally, and has supported Jason Manford on his arena tour of the UK. He is also a writer for Epic Rap Battles of History (Seasons 6+7) and has achieved viral success online, racking up over 200 million views for both his improvised and scripted hip hop comedy videos. He is a former UK Improv Smackdown Champion and has taught improv for groups, individuals, corporations and festivals worldwide.
He has trained in improv with some of the world's leading schools and instructors, including Second City, iO Chicago, UCB, Annoyance Theatre, Susan Messing, Keith Johnstone, TJ & Dave and The Groundlings.
