A warming evening of music, poetry, song and moving image from benjin (w/Clara Helbig), Kareem Samara and Cirenne.
About this Event

Part of Theatreship's guest nights - where contemporary artists take over the ship to highlight the stories they want to tell.

In this edition, we welcome artists and musicians benjin, Clara Helbig, Kareem Samara, and Cirenne onboard.

Here's some more info from them:

Join us for The Last Days of Sail, a warming evening of music, song, poetry and experimental moving image from benjin (with Clara Helbig), Kareem Samara and Cirenne. Music will begin at 1900!
benjin is a multi-instrumentalist, artist and storyteller. His solo work combines guitar, cello, harp, clarinet, vocals, nyckelharpa, field recordings and found sounds. Drawing upon benjin’s experiences of a lifetime working on the coastal waters of the UK, these compositions combine traditional folk song forms with dense free form jazz improvisations, minimalist classical music and sound collage. In Autumn 2025, benjin released two new solo albums, 'Vol X: The Last Days of Sail' and 'Vol XI: Partita II Palestine' - an interpretation of Bach's most famous solo violin sonata played on the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle). Clara Helbig is an artist, filmmaker and curator whose practice navigates the entangled relationships between humans, animals and landscapes within the fragile logics of consumer capitalism. Her work has been presented internationally across exhibitions and film festivals, including screenings of her short film disjointed (2020), which was awarded the Deutscher Kurzfilmpreis for Best Documentary Short.
Kareem Samara is a musician, sound artist and composer from London. A strong believer in collaboration, he works with a wide variety of poets, writers and musicians across many disciplines in Europe, the USA and the Middle East. His work combines traditional Arab and western acoustic instruments along with electronics, creating unique soundscapes and performances. (kareemsamara.bandcamp.com)
Cirenne are Celeste Cantor-Stephens (trumpet, objects, electronics) & Caelia Lunniss (violin, viola). They play new music with touches of klezmer, chamber music, the avant-garde, folk, jazz, improvisation and found sounds. Playful & cinematic, serious & silly, their music has been featured on BBC Radio 3, and won the 2022 Bubbe Award prize for Best New Klezmer Composition. (cirennemusic.bandcamp.com)

Theatreship is committed to broadening access to the arts - we know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If the regular ticket price is beyond what you feel able to afford for whatever reason, please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] and we will do everything we can to help, no questions asked.

We also offer arts supporter tickets, for those that can, to pay a higher price to support the venue, the artists who perform here and subsidised tickets for others.

Due to the historic nature of the ship, we’re sorry to say there is not currently step-free access into the theatre space. We have dedicated staff on hand to help with stairs, and an onsite wheelchair once you’re inside the venue. If you have any access needs, please do e-mail us at [email protected].
