About this Event

Group Walk: Leicester city centre to Gorse Hill City Farm cafe
Saturday 2 May at 10.30am
Starting from the Highcross Monument, Jubilee Square
Finishing at the Gorse Hill City Farm cafe
Around 90 minutes for the walk, medium pace. 2.2 miles.
Allow an extra 30 minutes for social opportunity at the cafe afterwards (optional).
Bus stops nearby on Ansty Lane for return journey.
Due to the terrain, we regret this is not an accessible walk, so is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
This walk is suitable for adults and older children (accompanied by an adult) who are confident walking for this duration, including an uphill, uneven forested section. Walkers are reminded to bring a bottle of water - there are no refreshment stops until we arrive at the City Farm .

A linear (one-way) walk from Leicester city centre to Gorse Hill City Farm, via the green spaces of The Rally and Stokeswood Park, and The Orchards local nature area. The Orchards is a little-known wooded area with narrow natural paths, which climb up gradually to Gorse Hill City Farm. Due to narrow entrance to The Orchards, and its uneven and vegetated terrain, this is not an accessible walk. This medium-pased walk is ideal for adults who like to stretch their legs and enjoy a slightly longer walk, which goes off the main path in places. Paths may be muddy after rain - suitable footwear is recommended. We'll arrive at the cafe around 12 noon and walkers have the option to stay for refreshments if they wish. A bus stop is nearby on Anstey Lane (near English Martyrs School) for return travel to the city centre. Visit the Choose How You Move journey planner for help planning your journey.

Walk booking information

Please book via Eventbrite. Alternatively, phone 0116 454 2860 (Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm). We regret our phone line is not staffed at weekends or bank holidays. Booking is required for adults, but not required for children (under 16). Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. Please check the walk details to ensure it is suitabile for your child's abilities.

If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel via Eventbrite or contact us by phone so we can allow others the opportunity to attend.

Travel to the walk

Anstey Lane is served by buses for your return journey. There is a bus stop near Gorse Hill City Farm, located opposite the English Martyrs School. To help plan your journey try the Choose How You Move Journey Planner tool and please consider travelling sustainably (bus, cycle or walk) where possible.

Bus travel information - including routes, timetables, fares and tickets - is available on the Choose How You Move Public Transport pages. You can now pay bus fare via "tap on" and "tap off" with a preferred contactless payment method. The system will cap all fares at the best value adult ticket.

New Walkers

If you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete our Walker Registration form in advance. You can do this online or by phone. You will receive an email in the days leading up to the event with information about registration. You only need to complete our New Walker form once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place on Eventbrite). If you are unable to complete the form digitally, paper copies will be made available at the walk. The form is for adults only, children are not required to complete it.

Dress for the weather

Remember to dress appropriately for the weather. Our group walks will go ahead in most weather. We recommend the following:

  • Comfortable sturdy footwear
  • Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain
  • On cooler days wear appropriate layers and a coat/jacket
  • On hot days wear sun protection (hat, sun screen)
  • Please bring a bottle of water with you, especially in warm weather.

Group size

Booking is required, so we can keep the group size manageable.

Self-guided routes

If you have been unable to book onto one of our group walks, or you prefer to explore with your family or friends, self-guided routes are available to download from the routes page of our Choose How You Move website or via the Go Jauntly smartphone app. For other ideas, do check out our Walk Inspiration page which features walk videos and quiz trails.

Enjoy exploring Leicester on foot.
