In the aftermath of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, Lebanese artist and art historian Gregory Buchakjian led efforts to rescue and restore Artemisia Gentileschi’s painting Hercules and Omphale, which had been severely damaged in the blast. Thanks to his advocacy, the painting has now been restored by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and is currently on view at CMA alongside a new photographic installation by Buchakjian. In this virtual conversation with Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Daniel Marcus, Buchakjian will discuss his long history with the painting, which he discovered as a student in the 1990s, and its ongoing significance to the city of Beirut. This online-only program is free with registration.
