Gouache is an opaque, matte, wonderfully forgiving medium — perfect for painters who want bold color, crisp edges, and the ability to revise as they go. In this workshop, Kris Woodward will introduce you to the expressive possibilities of gouache painting and guide you through creating a vibrant landscape step‑by‑step. Unlike watercolor, gouache dries quickly, uses very little water, and allows you to paint dark to light with confident, opaque strokes.
Darks become lighter, lights become darker, and tiny marks stay sharp. Best of all, layering won’t disturb what’s underneath, making the medium totally correctible and ideal for building depth and atmosphere. Permanent white becomes your most important color — the key to highlights, texture, and subtle shifts in value.
Kris will demo a gouache landscape and work closely with you as you develop your own piece, helping you understand how to control opacity, blend soft transitions, and build a composition that feels grounded and luminous.
What You’ll Explore

- Create crisp, controlled strokes without the drippy quality of watercolor
- Build layers that won’t reactivate beneath new paint
- Use permanent white to shape light, form, and atmosphere
- Develop a cohesive, expressive landscape with confident color choices
