Some nights in this city carry a charge that settles over the streets long before the doors open. The air thickens, the eyeliner sharpens, and the regulars drift toward Ding Dong Lounge with a sense of purpose. Friday 22 May brings that energy in full force as Auckland marks World Goth Day, the annual global celebration of the subculture built on atmosphere, expression, and a devotion to the dark.World Goth Day began in the UK in 2009 after a BBC Radio 6 broadcast spotlighted goth culture. The idea resonated with DJs, artists, and communities who recognised the value of a day dedicated to the music, fashion, and creativity that shape the scene. The date now anchors events across the world, each one defined by the people who keep goth culture alive.
Auckland’s gathering unfolds inside the familiar brick‑and‑black walls of Ding Dong Lounge, a venue that understands the mood, the music, and the crowd that fills the room for nights like this. The atmosphere builds from the moment the doors open, and the space becomes a home for everyone who thrives in the dark.
UPSTAIRS — LIVE BANDS AT DEAD WITCH
COMMUNITY TREATMENT ORDER (CTO)
Tāmaki Makaurau’s post‑punk five‑piece return with crooner‑dark vocals, basslines that move with intent, and guitars that shimmer with tension. Their sound draws comparisons to Fontaines D.C., Nick Cave, and Joy Division, and their presence in the local alternative scene continues to expand. CTO arrive following the release of their new four‑track EP Share the Lack (released 17 April 2026), featuring Crows Eye, All Gum, Private Psycho, and Time Reaps. The record captures the band’s atmospheric weight and emotional grit, and their live set brings that energy into sharp focus.
ANARCHY IN EDEN
A four‑piece delivering post‑punk with a twist of goth, Anarchy In Eden specialise in “music for the wretched.” Their sets carry serrated riffs, bleak romanticism, and a sense of emotional gravity that fits the night with precision.

The downstairs bar shifts into a pulse of synths, rhythm, and movement with sets from:
