In Gods and Monsters, the openly gay Hollywood legend Ian McKellen plays a dramatized version of the openly gay Hollywood legend James Whale, the revered director behind classics like Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man. Following Whale in his final days, the film primarily focuses on the budding odd-couple relationship between the director and his straight gardener as they recount stories of their very different but equally fascinating lives. A great tale of class indifference, homophobia, and the lasting detriment of severe PTSD (all factors that lead to its cleverly incisive script winning an Academy Award), this (heavily fictionalized) biopic may be a 1990s rendition of life in the 1950s, but it still feels remarkably current today.(Michael Cuby, THEM)
