About this Event

From knowing whether your manuscript is polished enough, to writing a strong query letter and deciding where to submit, this presentation will cover everything you need to know about getting your manuscript out into the world. And most importantly, what to do after you hit "Send."

You’ll often only get one chance to get an editor to read your work. How do you know when you’re ready to hit "Send" on your manuscript? In this presentation, our Writer-in-Residence, Deborah Kerbel, will de-mystify the querying process, including:

  • The importance of a good, honest critique group
  • The elements of a strong query letter
  • The agent conundrum
  • Decoding publisher’s submission guidelines and terminology
  • When it's okay to "nudge" an editor (if ever!)
  • What you should expect after hitting "Send" on your submission
  • How to turn the "waiting game" into something productive
  • Rejection etiquette: how authors handle it, keep it professional, and make it work to their advantage

Deborah has published more than thirty books across genres, from picture books and graphic novels to young adult fiction. In May and June, she will offer writing workshops for all ages, along with one-on-one consultations, manuscript critiques, and drop-in Q&A sessions.
