Invaluable tips for parents of Year 6 black and mixed-race children to ease the transition to secondary school
About this Event

Moving up to Year 7 is an exciting time for most children. It’s also a scary time. If your child is black or mixed-race, there is the added burden of being at risk of finding themselves on the wrong side of a teacher. The secondary school years are a time when, for some of our children, they are confronted with challenges completely unrelated to the subjects they are studying that test their emotional resilience.

The playing field for black and mixed-race children is remains an unfair one, and racism takes its toll on too many young minds. So, what do we, as parents, need to do to give our sons and daughters the best possible chance of surviving Years 7 to 11 with their mental health intact? The Answer, according to Laurie O’Garro, lies with us: the time has come for a revolution in the way we parent.

Over the course of 90 minutes, Laurie will share some tips on how parents can prepare their children practically and emotionally for the first term of ‘big school’. She is an enthusiastic advocate of conscious parenting and believes it is the secret of our children’s success.

This talk is particularly aimed at parents of Year 6 black and mixed-race children, but any parent who feels they would benefit from suggestions on parenting or who would like to be more ‘clued up’ when it comes to working with their child’s school is welcome to join.

Join Laurie O’Garro, London-based parent and teacher with nearly three decades of teaching experience in a range of settings, as she talks about how parents of black and mixed-race children can support them through that crucial transition from Year 6 to Year 7.
