About this Event
Ever feel like you’re working on autopilot - chasing deadlines, productivity, and “progress”… but losing yourself in the process?
What if capitalism isn’t just a system out there but something we’ve absorbed in here?
Join us for “Getting Free: Unlearning Capitalism from the Inside Out”, a 90-minute workshop exploring how the stories of growth, domination, and separation shape our work, our wellbeing, and even the climate crisis.
Facilitated by the Scintilla Centre in collaboration with FFASE (Freelancers for a Sustainable Earth), we’ll explore how stories of domination, growth, and productivity culture live in our bodies, influence our choices, and fuel burnout.
We’ll bridge systems thinking and inner work to unpack how we’ve internalised capitalism’s story and begin composting it into something regenerative.
Expect deep reflection, group dialogue, and practical tools to leave burnout behind and reimagine work that feels aligned, alive, and whole.
⚠️ Limited to 15 spots.

Agenda
🕑: 04:00 PM - 04:10 PM
Grounding & Intro (10 min)
Info: We’ll begin with a short grounding practice to arrive, breathe, and reconnect with the body. Laura will introduce herself and the Scintilla Centre’s purpose. You’ll also get an overview of the workshop and its guiding principles.
🕑: 04:10 PM - 04:25 PM
Context Setting (15 min)
Info: Using David Foster Wallace’s “water” analogy, we’ll explore the invisible systems we swim in, how capitalism quietly shapes our choices and well-being. By seeing the water, we gain the power to make new choices and begin bridging our inner and outer worlds through the “Getting Free” framework.
🕑: 04:25 PM - 04:45 PM
Stories That Shape Our World (20 min)
Info: We’ll look at the dominant cultural stories - growth, domination, and separation - and how they’ve been internalised. Together, we’ll explore how these systems live within us, what the story of capitalism looks like on a personal level, and how self-inquiry and embodied awareness can begin to shift it.
🕑: 04:45 PM - 05:05 PM
Group Work (20 min)
Info: We’ll dive into real-world examples and reflective questions. How does capitalist thinking show up in our work? Who benefits? What would feel liberatory instead? Through the “Freelancer’s Dilemma” exercise, we’ll examine common tensions between our values and the pressure to perform, and imagine new, regenerative responses.
🕑: 05:05 PM - 05:20 PM
Optional Exercise: Imagination & Futures (Time Dependent)
Info: If time allows, we’ll step into a creative reframing exercise called the “Work Council,” where each person is advised by someone from a post-capitalist future. A playful, imaginative way to access new possibilities beyond hustle and overwork.
🕑: 05:20 PM - 05:25 PM
Framework Overview (5 min)
Info: We’ll close the learning loop by reflecting on how unlearning cultural stories is only the beginning. The foundation for deeper wisdom and the regenerative skills needed for this time.
🕑: 05:25 PM - 05:30 PM
Close & Call to Action (5 min)
Info: We’ll end with collective reflections and key takeaways. You’ll be invited to stay connected through the Scintilla Centre mailing list and future FFASE events dedicated to meaningful, ethical, and sustainable work.
