About this Event
Description
We all have stories to tell, whether we tell them through fiction, memoir, poetry, or other writing realms, but many people fear the daunting blank page. This class will help you get over this fear through practice and a few helpful hints. We will go over the basic elements of a good story (whether true or fictional) and learn how to provide constructive feedback.
This class is for anyone who has an interest in writing but needs a gentle push to get them started as well as for those occasional writers who want to take things to the next level. The class will be a mix of in-class writing in response to prompts and some discussion to reinforce the essentials. Jon hopes that students will continue supporting each other in an ongoing writing group. Students should bring their writing instruments of choice -- paper and pen/pencil or a laptop or tablet -- as we will be writing during the class.
Professor(s) or Facilitator(s): Jon Kaplan, kaplanponders.blogspot.com/
Jon Kaplan grew up in New York City and Vermont. A retired civil engineer who lives in small-town Vermont, his focus now is on writing. Jon enjoys writing short stories in the speculative fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror genres. His stories are centered on the human condition and how sometimes the worst monsters are just like us. His first published short story, “A Perfect Host,” recently appeared in the anthology Ghosts, Echoes and Shadows. His poetry has been featured in PoemTown Randolph, and he has written articles for the White River Valley Herald. Find his blog, Kaplan Ponders, at https://kaplanponders.blogspot.com/.
