About this Event
Renowned fiddler, scholar, and tradition-bearer Gerry O’Connor presents The Rose in the Gap, a compelling audio-visual lecture exploring the rich dance music traditions of the Oriel region in southeast Ulster.
Inspired by a chance encounter in 1976 that sparked over four decades of research, performance, and scholarship, O’Connor brings to life music from Counties Louth, Armagh, Monaghan, and Cavan—much of it drawn from the historic Donnellan Collection and made accessible for the first time in his landmark 2018 publication. Through live fiddle performance, rare manuscript images, maps, and storytelling, he traces the cultural landscape of the region and examines its deep connections to Scottish musical influence and the Gaelic Revival of the early 20th century.
Both illuminating and entertaining, this presentation blends history, music, and place—offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear and understand a unique body of Irish traditional music, reimagined from the archives and performed live by one of its foremost champions.
