As part of the Berlin Freedom Week 2025, the Association of Tibetans in Germany and the Tibet Initiative Deutschland e.V. present the German premiere and press screening of the new film by Tibetan director Shenpenn Khymsar.
Four Rivers Six Ranges (2025) is a visually stunning and deeply emotional historical action drama about Tibet’s struggle for freedom.

Following the screening, there will be a live Q&A with director Shenpenn Khymsar, who will join remotely from the United States. He will discuss the making of the film, his artistic vision, and the continuing significance of Tibet’s freedom movement today — a movement that endures through peaceful, nonviolent means and continues to inspire people around the world.
About the Film
As the People’s Liberation Army sweeps across Tibet, slaughtering monks and crushing all forms of resistance, Gonpo Tashi gathers a band of men to take up arms.
“Our land, our religion, our culture, and our precious Dalai Lama are all in grave danger,” he warns as volunteers from across Tibet rally together.
It is 1958. Under the ruthless command of General Tan, the Chinese army tightens its control over the land, suppressing protests and destroying monasteries. Against the advice of the collaborating Tibetan government, Gonpo Tashi and his comrades take up the fight to defend their nation — convinced that freedom can only be preserved through resistance.
While Tibetan resistance and nationalism have often been portrayed in film from the perspective of exile and suffering under oppression, Shenpenn Khymsar’s new work offers a different and equally vital perspective: the determined armed resistance against unlawful occupation.
It tells of a time when monks traded their red robes for rifles — when courage, solidarity, honor, and devotion to a shared cause were carried onto the battlefield.

Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung findet ein Live-Q&A mit Regisseur Shenpenn Khymsar statt, der aus den USA zugeschaltet wird. Er wird über die Entstehung des Films, seine künstlerische Vision und die Bedeutung des tibetischen Freiheitskampfes heute sprechen – einer Bewegung, die bis heute in friedlicher, gewaltfreier Form weiterlebt und Menschen weltweit inspiriert.
Über den Film
Als die Volksbefreiungsarmee über Tibet hinwegfegt, Mönche abschlachtet und jede Form von Widerstand niederschlägt, versammelt Gonpo Tashi eine Gruppe von Männern, um bewaffneten Widerstand zu leisten. „Unser Land, unsere Religion, unsere Kultur und unser kostbarer Dalai Lama sind alle in großer Gefahr“, warnt er vor einer Versammlung bewaffneter Freiwilliger aus ganz Tibet.
Es ist das Jahr 1958. Unter dem rücksichtslosen Befehl von General Tan festigt die chinesische Armee ihre Kontrolle über das Land, unterdrückt Proteste und zerstört Klöster. Gegen alle Warnungen der kollaborierenden tibetischen Regierung nehmen Gonpo Tashi und seine Gefährten den Kampf auf, um ihre Nation zu verteidigen – überzeugt davon, dass Freiheit nur am Lauf eines Gewehrs gedeihen kann.
Während der tibetische Widerstand und Nationalismus filmisch bislang meist aus der Perspektive des Exils und des Leidens unter der Unterdrückung erzählt wurden, zeigt Shenpenn Khymsars neuer Film einen anderen, ebenso wichtigen Aspekt: den entschlossenen Widerstand gegen die völkerrechtswidrige Besatzung.
Er erzählt von einer Zeit, in der Mönche ihre roten Roben gegen Gewehre tauschten und die Werte Mut, Solidarität, Ehre und Hingabe an eine gemeinsame Sache auf das Schlachtfeld trugen.
