Bring your fictional characters to life in this in-depth workshop designed for writers of all genres. Learn how to build compelling backstories, develop strong characterisation, and define clear internal and external goals. You'll also explore the power of point of view, master dialogue writing and formatting, and refine your narrative voice. Perfect for anyone looking to create memorable, multi-dimensional characters that resonate with readers.

This will be an in-depth dive into creating complex fictional characters, including:

  • How to create a compelling backstory for your character
  • Characterisation and how to use it effectively
  • Internal and external character goals
  • Point of view: how to use it appropriately for your chosen genre and audience
  • Writing convincing dialogue and formatting it correctly
  • Narrative voice and how to discover and refine yours.


Cost: $12.50

Age: 16+

Skill level: None required.

Equipment: Paper and pen for activities.


About the Facilitator:

Aylish Dowsett is an award-winning writer, tutor, and copywriter. She teaches creative writing at The Writers’ Studio, The Writing Quarter, Creative Writing Ink, and St George and Sutherland Community College. Her work has been published in Mythrill Fiction, Collider, Honi Soit, Grapeshot, The Quarry, and many others. She loves cats and all things weird and British.
