A free, all-ages celebration at the Library with performances, activities, and stories—kicking off the Main Library’s 20th anniversary year.
About this Event

Generations Day is a free, all-ages community gathering and the signature kickoff to San Mateo Celebrates—marking the beginning of the Main Library’s twentieth anniversary year.

On Saturday, April 25, the San Mateo Public Library comes alive with music, storytelling, food, and opportunities for reflection. Designed to welcome children, parents, grandparents, and neighbors, the day invites the community into shared civic space—where experiences unfold across generations.

Visitors are welcome to arrive at 10:00 AM and explore a full day of drop-in activities and scheduled programs throughout the building. Highlights include:

  • Storytime with Children’s Librarians, Elephant & Piggie, and civic leaders
  • Family concert with José-Luis Orozco
  • Chef Martin Yan cooking demonstration and book signing
  • Hands-on workshops and generational storytelling experiences
  • Elephant & Piggie photo opportunities for young readers

Throughout the day, guests can also enjoy a range of drop-in experiences, including a digital photo booth, a community fiber arts gathering, and behind-the-scenes “Beehive” tours of the Library’s automated returns system.

At 2:00 PM, the community is invited to gather in the Library lobby for a 20th Anniversary Cake Cutting, marking this milestone year together.

Visitors are also encouraged to explore a series of installations presented throughout the building as part of San Mateo Celebrates, highlighting the stories, histories, and ideas that shape San Mateo—from local family businesses to global scientific discovery.

Generations Day is part of San Mateo Celebrates, a weeklong festival of free programs and events highlighting the power of stories, ideas, and community.
