Gender In The Room - training for MH professionals (in person)

Most clinicians have been told they should affirm gender diversity, but few have had the chance to feel how gender shows up between therapist and client. Our own gender stories, comfort zones, and identities live quietly in the therapy room, shaping what we notice, what we avoid noticing, and how we connect.

This training invites therapists to go beyond rote affirmation and into relational attunement. Through reflection, discussion, and real-world case vignettes, participants will explore how gender operates in transference and countertransference, how to recognize their own embodied gender narratives, and how to use this awareness to create deeper, braver therapeutic spaces for gender-diverse clients.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

1. Define transference and countertransference within the context of gender identity and expression.
2. Identify at least three ways a clinician’s own gender narrative may influence the therapeutic relationship.
3. Describe the impact of internalized gender norms on both therapist and client dynamics.
4. Apply strategies to recognize and work through gender-based countertransference reactions.
5. Demonstrate methods to integrate reflective and embodied awareness practices to sustain affirming, attuned care for gender-diverse clients.

This training is facilitated by Sarah Gilbert, LCSW of Transitions Therapy LLC in CT. She's been delivering trainings on gender diversity since 2018.
