About this Event

This workshop explores questions of gender and bodies and the relationship between them.

Speakers will discuss topics such as:

· How should we understand forms of gendered embodiment?

· How do gender and bodies relate to other areas of our lives, such as parenthood?

· Should we ‘abolish gender’? And if so, what does that involve?

Participants are also invited to attend Elise Woodard (KCL)’s talk at the University of Southampton’s Philosophy Departmental Research Seminar (3pm-5pm) and to join us for dinner or drinks after the Departmental Research Seminar.

(You can also have a break instead of attending the seminar and join us for drinks or dinner at 5.15pm!)

The workshop will take place in room 1065 in the Murray Building (Building 58) on Highfield Campus, University of Southampton, Southampton SO17 1BJ.

Babies and children are welcome at the workshop, but unfortunately, only by prior arrangement and with some conditions. To manage the needs of all participants, we ask that babies and young children are not brought into the main workshop room during talks, unless asleep or quiet. Parents attending with young children can participate in talks online in the quieter room/ family room and participate in social events in person. Parents are responsible for their children at all times.

An additional room in the same building as the workshop has been booked for participants’ use. This will act a quieter room as well as a family room for participants with young children. The workshop sessions will be streamed into the quieter room/ family room, and participant will be able to ask questions online or through the chat. Parking on Highfield is very limited. We recommend that participants use public transport where possible. We are hoping to be able to provide workshop participants with parking on Avenue Campus and walk to Highfield. This is approximately a 15-minute walk. We are also hoping to reserve a limited number of spaces reserved on Highfield for participants who would struggle with the walk, but do not hold a Disabled Badge. You will be asked during the registration process whether you plan to bring a car, so we can make sure we have the right parking arranged for you.

We will provide tea, coffee, and snacks during the coffee breaks. We aim to accommodate all dietary requirements. Please let us know any that apply to you when you register.


If you wish to buy lunch, there is a Costa Coffee 2 minutes’ walk from the venue. There is also The Piazza Food Court and vegan restaurant The Plant Pot, both in the Student Union Building around 6 minutes’ walk from the venue.

Talks will last around 40 minutes. There will then be a five-minute break, followed by a 15-minute Q&A.


We will permit questions during Q&A to be written down rather than spoken out loud. If online, please use the chat feature to type out your question. If in person, please write the question down on paper and hand it to one of the organisers.
