Salon Music returns to Woordfees 2025.Following two successive years of sold-out performances at the Toyota Woordfees, Salon Music presents Gabriel’s Oboe—a concert shaped by depth, clarity, and extraordinary classical music talent from the Western Cape Province.
At its centre stands a string orchestra drawn from the Cape’s most accomplished young players. These musicians, long embedded in the region’s chamber music tradition, now perform in full command of their home stage—joined by the internationally acclaimed Korean oboist Kyeong Ham, principal of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
In this rare and quietly powerful collaboration, Cape artistry meets international resonance. The programme, compiled by Willem Vogel, includes Antiche danze ed arie by Respighi, oboe concertos by Bellini and J.S. Bach, Schubert’s Adagio from the String Quintet in C, and Morricone’s luminous Gabriel’s Oboe.
Suzanne Martens leads as concertmaster, and joins Kyeong in the Bach double concerto for oboe and violin, with Mario Nell at the harpsichord.
Presented in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Centre and the Rupert Music Foundation, this concert is a tribute to the musical sovereignty of the Cape, and a reminder that some of the finest artistry emerges not from elsewhere—but from here.
