During this practice, typically done lying down, your eyes are closed while listening to a meditation. In a session, you’re gently led through a series of stages, such as setting a personal intention (called a sankalpa), noticing physical sensations through a body scan, focusing on your breath, and moving through visualizations. These stages can all help relax your brain into slower wave states, similar to those in deep sleep. The goal isn’t to fall asleep — although it’s fine if you do. The goal is to allow your body to rest so deeply that your thoughts quiet down, your muscles release tension, and your awareness becomes expansive. Clinical studies have shown that yoga nidra meditation is associated with positive physiological changes, including improvements in several hematological variables, red blood cell counts, blood glucose levels, and hormonal status. Two neuroimaging studies have shown that yoga nidra produces changes in endogenous dopamine release and cerebral blood flow, a further confirmation that its effects on the CNS are objectively measurable. The practice has also been shown to reduce psychometrically measured indices of mild depression and anxiety. Studies have also shown that just 30 minutes of a Yoga Nidra practice is equivalent to 4 hours of REM sleep.
*Sound Baths are a meditative experience where participants lie down and are immersed in sound vibrations from instruments like gongs and singing bowls. This practice aims to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance emotional well-being. Sound healing goes way back. Studies suggest sound baths may help lower stress, improve mood, and support emotional well-being. Sound baths may help calm the nervous system. Certain tones and rhythms can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, or your body’s “rest-and-digest” mode. That helps slow your heart rate, relax muscles, and ease stress. It can shift your brain waves by using different wave patterns, depending on what you’re doing. Sound baths may help shift you from active beta waves to slower alpha, theta, or delta waves, which are linked to calmer, meditative states. They may also sync up your brain and body. Some researchers think sound can create a more organized brainwave pattern that helps you feel mentally clear and physically relaxed. They’re also studying how vibrations may help improve blood flow and influence muscles, cells, bones, and other tissue and is currently being used in various hospital settings! It can also help your body handle stress better. In small studies, sound baths have been linked to lower levels of cortisol (a key stress hormone) and improved heart rate variability (a marker of how well your body bounces back from stress).
