Your invited to Zen Den Retreats monthly Full Moon Retreat on Friday May 1st 2026 from 7pm to 10pm at Emergence studio in Kiama!!!🌹This months theme is May Day!
May Day in rural Greece, known as Protomagia (1st of May), is a vibrant, ancient, and non-religious celebration marking the final victory of summer over winter, rebirth, and nature's fertility.
Rooted in agrarian traditions, rural communities celebrate by collecting wildflowers, making wreaths, and participating in rituals designed to protect homes and ensure a good harvest.
The May Wreath (Stefani): The most iconic tradition is creating a wreath, or stefani, from wildflowers, herbs, and young branches (almond, fig, or pomegranate). It is hung on the front door to bring the vitality and fertility of nature into the home.
Protection Rituals: In rural areas, the wreath often includes more than just flowers. To ward off the "evil eye" and protect against evil, people incorporate garlic, thorns, nettles, or ears of barley.
These wreaths stay on the doors until midsummer.
Fire Jumping (Eve of May 1st): In some rural areas, a fire-jumping custom occurs on the night before May Day. People, particularly children, jump over fires made from the previous year's dried wreaths to gain immunity from sickness and bad luck.
Cleaning the Home: On the eve of May 1st, people often empty water containers and fill them with fresh water from a spring to wash their faces, believing it has purifying powers.
Across ancient traditions the full moon is seen as a portal! A thinning of the veil and a moment when endings become initiations.
