Fruit Bats’ The Landfill (out June 12, 2026 via Merge Records) finds Eric D. Johnson turning the weight of the past into something expansive and hopeful. Inspired by the landfills scattered across the American Midwest, the album reflects on memory, regret, possibility, and the emotional “refuse” we carry with us — all while reaching for moments of beauty and transcendence.
Building on the raw immediacy of 2025’s Baby Man, Johnson reunited with his longtime band to create his most collaborative and live-sounding Fruit Bats record in years. Recorded largely live in the studio with minimal overdubs, The Landfill captures the chemistry of a band at full strength: warm, psychedelic, loose, and deeply human.
The result is a collection of soaring indie-rock songs that balance ecstatic melodies with vulnerability and reflection. From the widescreen title track to the driving “Perhaps We’re a Storm” and bittersweet “Think Aboutcha,” The Landfill stands among the strongest work in Fruit Bats’ 25-year career — heartfelt, open, and alive with possibility.
