Join us in the historic village of Glenarm for a unique opportunity to learn traditional skills and explore heritage like never before!
Morning Session: Start the day with John Tierney from The Historic Graves Project where you'll be introduced to graveyard recording, examining symbolism, lettering styles, and the history behind gravestones.
Lunch Break: Take in the stunning historic surroundings of Glenarm Castle while enjoying a well-deserved break.
🔨 Afternoon Workshop: Head to the Carved at the Castle studio for a two-hour stone carving session. Using the gravestones recorded in the morning as inspiration, you'll get hands-on experience with this traditional craft and even create your own design!
About The Historic Graves Project:
A community-focused grassroots heritage initiative, The Historic Graves Project supports local groups to take an active role in recording their history. Through low-cost, high-tech field surveys, participants are trained to record and document historic graveyards and oral histories. These records are then shared online, creating a unified resource that connects communities with their past. The project provides a structured system and sequence to help standardize historic graveyard surveys, ensuring that valuable heritage is preserved for future generations.
About Carved at the Castle 🏰🔨
We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Carved at the Castle, a dedicated team of traditional skills experts who are passionate about preserving Ireland’s built heritage.
With experience working on many high-profile projects, their workshops offer hands-on training in Traditional Heritage Skills. These classes are designed to give homeowners, professionals, builders, and craftsmen an introduction to the techniques essential for the maintenance and conservation of historic properties. Their passion for craftsmanship and heritage makes them the perfect partners for this unique experience in Glenarm Castle!
FREE Experience! – This incredible workshop is completely free, made possible by The Treasure Ireland Project from National Churches Trust thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players. Treasure Ireland is also supported by the Historic Environment Division at the Department for Communities.
