Maryland CEUs Information:

This training meets the requirement for 3 Category I continuing education units (CEUs Category 1 focusing on anti-oppressive licensure renewal in Maryland for social workers with a focus on race, culture, or equity. It also meets the Association of Play Therapy learning requirement for Special Subject Topics: For RPT renewal, two hours must be specific to cultural and social diversity in play therapy


This is a virtual-only training and meets the criteria for a Live Webinar

This webinar will not be recorded, as all participants will be on video. Please come with openness, curiosity, and acceptance of others’ views, life experiences, and thoughts.

Training Description:

Join this three-hour live webina to explore a clinical approach emphasizing cultural humility and inclusivity in therapeutic practices. This professionally curated session will look at our personal and professional influences shape therapeutic rapport, helping you connect authentically with clients from diverse backgrounds.


The session will provide a space for open discussion and sharing of concerns and hopes for supporting diverse clients and families.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the influence of personal and professional values, beliefs, and life experiences on establishing a safe and collaborative therapeutic rapport with clients.

2. Discuss the implications of current and historical racial injustices on clients' physical and emotional reactions during sessions.

3. Discuss several play therapy techniques and activities that foster empowerment, support, and constructive therapeutic bonds with clients and their families.

Continuing Education Credits:

This training provides 3 continuing education credits (CEUs) for the following organizations:

Association for Play Therapy (APT): 3 contact hours (Live Webinar)

Next Place Therapy Services is an APT-approved provider, #17-526.

National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC): 3 continuing education units

Next Place Therapy Services, LLC is an NBCC Approved Provider, #7270.

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB):

Next Place Therapy Services, LLC, Provider #2107, is approved by the ASWB ACE program to offer social work continuing education. The ACE provider approval period**is 07/30/2024–07/30/2025.

About the Presenter:
Sabra Starnes is a Clinical Social Worker, a transracial Adoptee, and an adoptive mother of two sons. Sabra and her twin sister were adopted as infants in a closed domestic adoption. Growing up in a transracial family in the Midwest had many joys and challenges. Sabra and her family experienced racism and discrimination as a transracial family.
As an expert adoption therapist for the past 23 years, she has the personal experience and professional training to work with Adoptees and adoptive families. She strongly advocates for children in care to have permanency or reunify with their birth families.
She is the Founder of Next Place Therapy Foundation, a non-profit she founded in 2020 with the mission to provide post-adoption support to the Adoptee and adoptive families locally and nationally.
Sabra received her bachelor's in Social Work from Bennett College, her Master's in Social Work from Catholic University, and a Master's in Education from American University. She specializes in adoption, foster care, parenting issues, and skills.
She provides adoption counseling and consultation using an attachment-based therapy connected with expressive therapies. Furthermore, she is passionate about her clinical work in speaking and training on adoption locally and nationally on various adoption topics to amply the adoptee experience.
As a lifelong learner, she has received training in Brainspotting, EMDR, IFS, Sandtray, Theraplay, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, and Trusted Behavior Relation Intervention.
