Renee Baker's music, a movable instrument ensemble as well as a fifth stream consciousness, demands to be heard in a new way. Playing the parts by reading the horizontal line, painted and text scores, one is encouraged to allow all influences to seep into ones consciousness. Dovetailing with the beginning of the computer age, her handwritten and hand painted scores are defiant and sacrilegious in the way they make performers stop, stay with each note, each phrase, each module, allowing every soundscape to develop and become more.
While creating unexpected characters and dialogue with her sound scores, there is no distinguishable decision between her visual and audio worlds. The association of these influences change the viewers access point to any soundscape. Having developed her system of CCL: CIPHER CONDUIT LINGUISTICS, In her music, this direction is called music hermeneutics — the science of understanding the meaning and explaining the figurative and semantic concepts and gestures of composition and interpretation of musical information.
The listener has to reset old notions as to what notes and sounds actually are, what music really is. They can, if they wish, take the notes apart like children take apart toys and put them back together again. Her methodologies of composing and conducting demand the reordering of music listening.

a•pe•ri•od•ic:
Founded in 2010 by Nomi Epstein, a•pe•ri•od•ic is an intersectional, member-run ensemble producing concerts of experimental music that encourage focused listening. The ensemble carefully selects creative work by local and international artists of all genders whose works take diverse approaches to composition. The collaborative creation process among the ensemble members and with the featured composers challenges conventional ideas of power relationships in “classical” music-making: each work is an exploratory process encouraging new technique with both traditional and unconventional instruments and probing the relationship between notated and improvised sound.
