(GULFPORT, MS) – In honor of Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history, Gulfport proudly announces its Juneteenth Week Celebration from Wednesday, June 19th, through Sunday, June 23rd, 2024. This week-long event promises to blend education, culture, service, and festivity to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrate the richness of African American culture.
The celebration kicks off on Wednesday, June 19th, at 10:19 AM with a City Commencement led by Mayor Billy Hewes. This solemn yet hopeful event will reflect on the significance of Juneteenth and reaffirm Gulfport's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Later that evening, at 6:19 PM, the Griots Society will host the 2nd Annual Harry C. Tartt
Ecumenical Service, inviting the community to come together in reflection and solidarity. This gathering will honor the oral traditions of African ancestors, sharing stories and cultural entertainment that inspire unity and resilience.
Thursday, June 20th, will be dedicated to Cultural Education Day Camp for elementary
students, providing a dynamic learning experience that celebrates African American history, art, and traditions. This interactive program aims to empower the next generation with knowledge and pride in their heritage.
Saturday, June 22nd, marks a Day of Service, as Gulfport residents come together to give back to their community. From beautification projects to volunteer efforts, participants will honor the spirit of Juneteenth by serving others and building a stronger, more inclusive Gulfport.
The celebration culminates on Sunday, June 23rd, with a City-Wide Festival, filling Westside Park with music, food, and joyous celebration. This vibrant event will feature live performances, cultural exhibits, local vendors, children activities and more, inviting everyone to join in the festivities and honor the legacy of Juneteenth.
During the Freedom Festival for 2024 , the spotlight shines on emerging talent with the Mary Spinks-Thigpen Talent Showcase. Young artists from Gulfport will showcase their skills in music, dance, poetry, and more, competing for scholarships that support their artistic endeavors and educational pursuits.
Gulfport City-Wide Juneteenth Celebration Committee hopes Gulfport residents will embrace the spirit of the celebration and come out to enjoy the festivities and celebrate African-American history and culture.
