Freedom to Run: Connecting Glasgow to Bethlehem
GGEC Show Israeli Genocide the Red Card and Glasgow Bethlehem Twinning Association host the remarkable film, Freedom to Run; with contribition from Ivan McKee MSP who has run marathons in both Scotland and Palestine.
Freedom to Run is a documentary following Palestinian group Right to Movement and Scottish runners training for marathons, highlighting how checkpoints, permits, and occupation restrict movement, turning a simple act into a struggle. It showcases shared humanity while exposing the stark, unequal daily lives in the West Bank. Key aspects of Freedom to Run:
- Documentary Focus: The film bridges two worlds, tracking a Glasgow-based group and Palestine's "Right to Movement" (RTM) as they exchange visits to run the Palestine and Edinburgh marathons.
- Restrictions on Movement: It highlights that for Palestinians in the West Bank, moving more than a few kilometers is often impossible due to checkpoints, the apartheid wall, and permit demands.
- Symbolism of Running: The film uses the marathon to showcase how political realities impede basic freedoms, asking if running is truly free under occupation.
- Cultural Exchange & Humanity: Despite different lives, the runners find shared connections, solidarity, and mutual support.
- Filmmakers: Directed by Dr. Cairsti Russell (sociologist at University of Glasgow) and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Stephen Sheriff.
